As you probably know United face Barnsley tonight in the Carling Cup. The holders visit Oakwell after Sunday’s demoralising loss at Anfield but there’s some big news: Gabriel Obertan will feature.

‘He`ll play tomorrow against Barnsley, it`s a good start for him,’ Sir Alex confirmed. The French winger has been bought for 3 million pounds but a spinal injury has kept him out of action so far. But he’s back and he might even start tonight as we aim to continue our defence of the cup.

Of course Obertan is hardly the saviour of our season, for two reasons. First: our season hardly needs to be saved, as it’s still only October and we’re two points behind Chelsea in second place and we are sitting comfortably atop of our Champions League group.

Second, he’s a guy who’s supposed to be a real talent and all but he was criticised for his attitude and application at his former club Bordeaux who were only too willing to let him go for a pittance. Sir Alex’s been enthusing about him though and his reserve outings showed one thing clearly: he’s got pace to burn. Which is something we really need in attack, as only Valencia is extra-quick (and Nani but he’s frustratingly useless frustratingly often).

Don’t expect much tonight of course: a good solid debut would be more than fine.
