It looks like that Gabriel Obertan will finally make his Manchester United debut this month. According to news reports, the French winger has recovered from the spinal injury that kept him on the sidelines and has started full training with the squad.

Obviously he’s some way short of match fitness but he should feature in the next two or three weeks – the most likely date is the Carling Cup clash at Barnsley on October 27. His recovery poses a threat for the ineffective and disappointing Nani who’d do well to start performing to the standards expected of him.

Obertan is a mystery though, it’s uncertain what we should expect from him. Bordeaux was willing to let him go for only 3m and he didn’t light up the stage at Lorient where he was loaned out for the final few months of his Ligue 1 career. He’s supposed to be a real talent but at his former club many were surprised by his move to United so it looks unlikely that he’ll play a major part this season. We may hope that his mere presence will spur Nani on a little…
