Despite rumours that Gary Neville will play a further part in the World Cup , Sven-Goran Eriksson is confident the calf injury is not as bad as some fear.

The Manchester United defender will find out today the results of a scan on the injury picked up in training at the Frankenstadion yesterday evening.

Neville, who missed the 2002 finals with a broken metatarsal, still holds out hope.

Eriksson: ‘Gary has a calf problem and he is very doubtful. He is going to have a scan and we will see how he is on Thursday morning. We will know a little better about him then.

‘It is different to the problem before. We took him off training because we didn’t want to risk anything. But that he should be out for the tournament … no, absolutely not.’
