Much has been made of the fact Wayne Rooney wasn’t on penalty duty against Southampton on Friday with Zlatan Ibrahimovic on spot kick duty in the United win on Friday.

Rooney has been on penalties for United for a while now but he’s now one of three players who have been selected by Jose Mourinho to take them with it left down to the trio to decide who want to take them.

Paul Pogba is the other who is on the list with Mourinho talking after the win at Old Trafford making it clear Rooney and Pogba had willingly passed on the responsibility to the Swede as ‘he’s the man.’

‘I designated three – Paul, Wayne and Zlatan – but sometimes I like the players to have the feeling ‘this is for me`. Wayne and Paul told themselves ‘Zlatan, when a penalty comes you are the first. If you don`t want to take it for some reason we are here, but you are the man.’ Between them they made that decision.’

As Ibrahimovic has missed something like only three penalties from his last 28 I think it was you can see why he’s taking them, if he doesn’t fancy one or isn’t on the field Rooney or Pogba will step up.

If the ball ends up in the net it doesn’t matter who takes it really does it!
