Those glorious days in the summer when the good sportsmanship associated with the Olympic Games breathed new optimism into the world of sport seem a long while ago.

Already the sport billed as ‘the greatest show on earth` has blown away that optimism with its seedy nature, racist talk and Football Association leveled charges.

With the Chelsea duo of John Terry and Ashley Cole having felt the force of the FA, there was the possibility that our own Robin Van Persie would be drawn into the seedy world of FA charges.

The Newcastle manager, Alan Pardew is adamant that Van Persie should face a charge for an apparent elbow on his player Yohan Cabaye, but thankfully the FA has ignored his requests and Van Persie remains a free man.
