This weekend’s showpiece in Cardiff could see Gary Neville complete a lifetime’s ambition of lifting a trophy as United captain. But he admits the competition remains fourth out of four on the list of United’s priorities each year.

Neville: ‘There is a misconception as to how we have treated this competition.

‘It is true to say that, for a number of years, when we were getting into the latter stages of the European Cup, we did treat it slightly differently.

‘But in the last four years we have reached the semi-final and a final, now we are in another final. That suggests we have treated seriously, not just this season but in three or four gone by.

‘Whilst everybody would accept it is the lesser of the four trophies, we are still desperate to win it.

‘There are some lads here who have not won medals and this game represents a great chance for them to stand on a podium and get the confidence that comes from winning trophies.’
