Most Efficient In Champions League – 2017

|

Must have been a quiet weekend as somebody has crunched the numbers to look at which players have been the most efficient in front of goal in the European Cup/Champions League competition.

Plenty are aware that Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi pretty much lead all of the charts out there when it comes to goalscoring and production for their teams, but neither player comes close – despite their own fantastic records – so some stars from the past in this particular table.

Drawn up by UEFA.com over the weekend, they took a a historic look at the most efficient marksmen in the competition but did limit those included to 20 or more matches to try and give a better and more consistent flavour to the result.

Top of the tree is Gerd Muller with a return of 34 goals in only 35 matches for Bayern Munich and in the full top ten whilst there are very familiar names there’s also two in particular that were new to me.

With the names included though it clearly shows roughly what generation and which clubs were more in charge and regular competitors in the competition across the years and for some it will no doubt be a nice nostalgic trip down memory lane when it comes to the likes of Ruud van Nistelrooy and Jean-Pierre Papin but maybe that’s me.

Anyway, take a look for yourself and if anybody is interested in the same for the old UEFA Cup and newly branded Europa League competition, that table – along with an all UEFA mix of tables – is available on the above link.
