The far from surprising announcement confirming that Paul Scholes had officially retired has opened up the doors for a piece of speculative journalism.

With a big hole in our midfield the tabloid press have wasted very little time in suggesting that the player to fill that void will be Luca Modric.

The Croatian is tipped to join that familiar transfer trail from White Hart Lane to Old Trafford, a trail that has already been blazed by Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov, with a fee of £25 million surfacing in some red-tops.

Modric has added further fuel to the fire by remarking to the media recently,

“If there`s an offer good for Tottenham and me, then a transfer is of course possible.”

“When you experience playing in the Champions League, you want to keep playing in it.”

Although Spurs have expressed no desire to break a recently signed six-year deal, it is widely acknowledged that the club, if they receive an offer they consider to be decent, usually sells.

Naturally, if that were to be the case, there`d be rivals for the players` signature, rivals that could push the price up.

We reckon this is definitely one to keep a watchful eye on this summer!
