Michael Owen won’t play again this season as his knee injury, picked up in the Carling Cup final, proved to be more serious than first thought. He’ll have an operation on his knee on Monday and his World Cup dreams are over.

‘It’s a serious blow to him and we are disappointed, too, because he never missed a training all season,’ said Sir Alex Ferguson today. The boss added that Federico Macheda has recovered and will start training with the first team next week.

With Owen out we are running out of options up front. Berbatov is playing with a slight injury while Rooney is a doubt for the Wolves game after Capello kept him on the field for 86 minutes against Egypt on Wednesday.

It could well mean a first ever league start for Mame Biram Diouf as we are light in midfield as well though Nani is back after his three-game ban. But things are not looking rosy, not at all…
