With Manchester United breaking the world record transfer fee, in acquiring the services of Paul Pogba, our neighbours from across the city were also splashing the cash.

Whilst Manchester United were willing to break the world transfer record to bring to Old Trafford a midfielder who many believe will go on to become the stand-out player in his position in the world over the coming weeks, Manchester City were splashing £47.5 million on John Stones, making him the second most expensive defender in the history of the game.

But what did City get for their money?

Last season Stones didn`t have the best of times, the defender made errors and after one error too many found himself benched. Many pundits suggested that although Stones has the potential to become a world-class defender his over-indulgence on the ball needs eliminating from his game.

So, with City having, once again, spent an absolute fortune on a defender, it`s interesting to read, in the Sun, Click Here, that City had the chance, last summer to sign our summer signing, the defender Eric Bailly.

But not only did City have the chance to sign the 22-year-old, they were offered the player for the princely sum of £6 million, but rejected the opportunity with Bailly, subsequently, going on to join Villarreal, from whom United signed him.

This coming season, it`ll be interesting to see who fares better in the Premier League, for their respective teams, Bailly or Stones!
