After the dramatic late comeback against Aston Villa last time out, the Old Trafford faithful will be hoping that United can get back to winning ways, against Wigan, whilst also producing a display that will indicate they are potential title winners this season.
Old Trafford will have the eyes of the media firmly focused on it this Saturday, if, as expected; Wayne Rooney makes his long awaited return to first team action.
It`ll certainly be interested to see what sort of reception Wayne gets form the Old Trafford faithful, especially considering the furor he caused with his want-away statements.
But one who is very reticent to join in the welcome back Rooney campaign, with that man being the Wigan Athletic boss, Roberto Martinez who talking about the possible comeback has remarked,
“You don`t want Rooney to come back against you.”
“If he plays then the task will be harder se he is one of the best players in world football.”
“At the moment it is going to be as if he is a new player, a fresh player.”
That`s probably the exact reason he was packed off to the USA I`d say! Although the latest indications, although it could be more of those infamous mind games, is that Rooney is destined for a place on the bench!
Manchester United Team News:
Sir Alex Ferguson will be without Antonio Valencia, Owen Hargreaves and Michael Owen for this fixture whilst there are doubts about Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs, Rafael da Silva and Wayne Rooney.
Of that quartet, Rio Ferdinand has a great chance of playing stating that his withdrawal at half time, in the England v France game, was merely a precautionary measure
One player coming back after suspension though will be Paul Scholes.
Player to watch: Wayne Rooney
Half a stone lighter, rested and rehabilitated, could this be the second coming or is he still a deeply troubled young man? I guess we`ll soon find out!
Wigan Team News:
Roberto Martinez brings his Wigan squad to Old Trafford without the following players, for one reason or another, Boyce, Caldwell, McCarthy and Pollitt whilst our very own Tom Cleverley isn`t allowed to play against his parent club.
Player to watch: Victor Moses
Showed great promise whilst on the books of Crystal Palace and is now settling in nicely at the DW Stadium, definitely one to watch.
Match Facts & Stats
Wigan have yet to beat us! Being relative newcomers to top-flight football our paths have crossed 15 times with Manchester United winning all 14 Premier League games against our near-neighbours whilst also triumphing in the Carling Cup Final when we played them in 2006
Sir Alex will be looking to capitalise on a good start to the season that has seen United unbeaten in their first 13 games, the first time we`ve managed this feat since the conception of the Premier League.
The man in charge for this fixture is Martin Atkinson.
This has to be a home win! No disrespect to Wigan but they`re not in our class and Roberto Martinez is fully aware that his side have been beaten heavily a couple of times already this season, most notably by Chelsea. We don`t expect a glut of goals this time around but we expect United to win by at least, although possibly more, two clear goals.
Our next fixture in the Premier League sees us entertain Blackburn Rovers next weekend. Meanwhile we travel to Ibrox to take on Glasgow Rangers in a Champions League group match in midweek.
