Our latest musing over the future of the Manchester United midfielder, Paul Pogba, caused quite a stir.
Our article – It’s Time To Bid Goodbye To A Manchester United Legend – raised many an objection to the word legend being used, perhaps, in hindsight, icon, may have been a better choice of word.
However, speculation relating to the future of the 27-year-old continues to generate newspaper column inches.
The latest piece of transfer tittle-tattle, courtesy of The Express, continues to hint at a probable departure, from Old Trafford, for Pogba but implies that a swap deal could be orchestrated to seal the deal.
Indeed, our referenced source is of the view that Manchester United are keen to acquire the services of the 29-year-old Welsh midfielder, Aaron Ramsey, as part of any deal with Juventus.
The suggestion has left me a little perplexed.
Would Ramsey bring something to the squad we don’t currently have?

Why would you swap a 27 year old Pogba for a 29 year old Ramsey?
First Ramsey. Could have walked to OT for nothing when he left Arsenal, but didn’t even consider United. While a decent player, would anyone consider him over Bruno Fernandes? If course not. Fernandes has set the benchmark for United’s ambitions, so anyone coming in, needs to be considered to have at least the same comprehensive package, quality, work ethic, professionalism, leadership, impact on the squad. This ain’t Ramsey.
If Pogba won’t commit to the club for at least the next 3 years, then by all means, bin him off for max cash or a deal that gives the team the best possible win-win.
The same clubs we want to compete with, but aren’t at the moment, are trying to fine-tune their teams in pursuit of European dominance, so why take their cast-offs?
It’s a seller’s market (see Porto for Fernandes, Leicester for Maguire, Palace for Wan-Bissaka, Dortmund for Sancho, or further afield, Liverpool for Coutinho, Chelsea for Hazard etc), none of them were saying, “you can have him in our fire sale” and neither should we.
I’d rather we extended his contract and waited them out cos whoever blinks first, loses.
If the top tier want to mitigate their spend, then make it worth our while, for players in the positions we need, of the new Fernandes benchmark. Juve need to trade De Ligt, maybe Rabiot at a push, Madrid Casemiro or Jovic, Inter Skriniar, and forget PSG, who would only consider Mbappe to keep him away from Madrid and the only player we’d have to top up a player exchange with cash.
If none of those players are on the table, we should
• continue to target the raised standards of Sancho & Haaland,
• the proven abilities of Partey or Saul,
• be proactive with the pursuit of Grealish, Konaté, Bellingham and, most importantly
• prioritise the development and continued integration of McTominay, Wan-Bissaka, Tuanzebe, Williams, Greenwood, James, Dalot, Fosu-Mensah and Mejbri, two-thirds of which, I would play before Ramsey in a Manchester United team.
