At Old Trafford last night, Manchester United did enough to surely make the second-leg of this Europa League last-32 knockout tie a formality.

A hat-trick from Zlatan Ibrahimovic condemned the French team to a miserable night and means, barring a disaster in France, Manchester United should progress in this cup competition.

Manchester United took the lead through a free-kick with Ibrahimovic seeing his set-piece take a wicked deflection and leave the St Etienne goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier rooted to the spot.

The lead was then doubled after some enterprising work from Marcus Rashford enabled the Swedish striker to tap home from close-range.

However, it wasn`t all one-way traffic with the French side causing United problems through the pace of Romain Hamouma and with efforts from Henri Saivet and Nolan Roux, both of which were a little too close for comfort.

Pushing for that third goal, a goal that would surely make the tie safe, Juan Mata was denied by Ruffier on two occasions whilst Paul Pogba saw a header rattle the crossbar and Anthony Martial forced another impressive save out of the St Etienne keeper.

But that third goal was to come and it came from the boot of Ibrahimovic who make no mistake from the penalty spot.

The second leg of the tie, in France, is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 22nd February with an early kick-off of 17:00 hours, surely it is a formality now!
