A miserable festive fixture programme continues with Manchester United dropping another two points, on Saturday, against Southampton.

After dropping points in the previous two festive fixtures, against Leicester City (a) and Burnley (h), Manchester United were expected to get back to winning ways against a struggling Southampton side.

Instead they produced a lacklustre display that saw them drop another two points making it a grand total of 3 points taken from a possible 9 available, thereby not only slipping further adrift of our neighbours Manchester City but also allowing Chelsea to leap-frog Manchester United and take second place in the Premier League table.

To further add to the woes, Manchester United lost their leading scorer, Romelu Lukaku, to injury with the player being carried off on a stretcher early in the first-half after a clash of heads.

When it came to chances, Manchester United could point to the fact they should have had a penalty when the ball struck the arm of Maya Yoshida, in the first-half. Instead the referee, Craig Pawson, simply waved play on, much to the disgust of Jose Mourinho.

But that decision shouldn`t be allowed to gloss over the fact that despite spending close to £300 million, this Manchester United side are not good enough to seriously challenge for the Premier League title.

Indeed, but for the exploits of David de Gea in the Manchester United goal, Southampton could have sneaked a win when the Spaniard produced a wonderful save to deny Shane Long.

After the latest set-back, it`ll be interesting to see what strategy Manchester United deploy in the soon to be open January transfer window.
