Man United “highly interetsed” in Brighton star – Plettenberg

|

According to the admired journalist, Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sport Germany, Manchester United’s hierarchy are “highly interested” in signing Brighton’s Moises Caicedo.

The 21-year-old is currently representing Ecuador at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and is hoping to help his side qualify for the knockout stages of football’s biggest competition with victory over Senegal today.

The Ecuadorian international has been a key performer for his side in the World Cup as he has helped his nation to a victory over the host nation Qatar and a respectable draw against the Netherlands.

Even though his performances for Brighton have been excellent, it is his performances on the world stage that have caught the eye.

Plettenberg has reported that United have entered the race to snap up the highly sought after midfielder, who joined Brighton in 2021 under Graham Potter and his performances have gone from strength to strength.

The midfield maestro was excellent when Brighton came to Old Trafford this season in August and Sky Sports pundit, Karen Carney who was working on the game for Sky Sports that day said that she could not understand how the United recruitment department failed to spot him but Brighton did.

“The best player for me today was Caicedo for Brighton. Why can Brighton find a player like that, but Manchester United can’t, [because] that is exactly who they [United] need. They can’t even find [those] gems and add them to their team”.

Despite Carney’s assessment, United recruitment team did identify him and had the opportunity to sign Caicedo in the winter of 2021, but the club passed up on the opportunity to sign him for just as little as £4.5 million back in 2021, according to The Athletic.

Nearly two years on, hopefully from a United perspective, the club do not pass on the opportunity to sign him, as his ability to be as an effortless and tidy ball player, and his vision from centre midfield can be a huge asset for United as they look to build a squad that will allow the Premier League giants to compete with the elite level clubs on a regular basis.

One thing that might give United an advantage over its rivals is the fact that Caicedo is a boyhood United fan. However, as the tweet above indicates, Brighton would love to hold onto their star player and “stay beyond 2023”.

With so many clubs looking to sign Caicedo, it will be interesting to see if he can achieve one of his dreams, and play at the Theatre of Dreams with United.
