It looks like Sir Alex did not offend or upset Ronaldo by criticising him after he carelessly gave the ball away against Villa and Porto and on both occasions the opposition scored from the resulting attack. On the other hand, Ronaldo’s been playing with a lot more vigour and motivation since that and now Fergie is praising him again.

‘What happens when a player scores 40-odd goals is that every opponent who plays against him the following season has to redefine his thinking how to stop him.

‘It took him some time to get over that but his rythmn’s back and this boy is fantastic. There’s no other word to describe him.

‘He is always a goal-threat. Every game he will have three or four good attempts – tell me any winger in the last 30 years who’s done that.’


Can’t argue with that – but maybe that warning should have come earlier, Ronaldo would have received a lot less cricism and stick this season. Not that it does him too much harm, though.
