United crashed out of the FA Cup at Anfield thanks to a late winner from Dirk Kuyt!
Team News – For the clash, Sir Alex was without the services of Rooney and rumours of a comeback for Ashley Young were not founded. The plethora of injuries meant that Sir Alex had to call on the golden-oldies of Giggs and Scholes in midfield. David de Gea was given the nod over Anders Lindegaard between the sticks.
With so much focus on the game, following the Evra / Suarez incident, Sir Alex appealed for calm ahead of the tie remarking,
‘We want to make sure we are talking about the game, nothing else. There is a responsibility on the players to behave properly and both sets of fans.’
United – De Gea, Rafael, Smalling, Evans, Evra, Scholes, Carrick, Giggs, Valencia, Welbeck, Park
Subs – Lindegaard, Ferdinand, Berbatov, Hernandez, Fabio, Keane, Pogba
First Half – United go the action underway at a hostile Anfield and created the first chance of the game when Valencia worked himself some space, delivered a great cross for Park to lay the ball back for Giggs who could only hit his shot straight at Reina in the Liverpool goal.
Our hosts responded with Henderson delivering an enticing cross into the box that saw Gerrard unable to control it and the chance was gone. As expected the challenges were flying in thick and fast, Carragher caught Park and Downing went through Evra.
United thought they had taken the lead when Valencia unleashed a shot but it crashed against the post and Liverpool breathed again.
Unfortunately, we were to fall behind with the very next attack when De Gea couldn`t handle the bodies around him in the six yard box, when a corner came over, and Agger had the simple job of heading home.
Liverpool 1 United 0 (Agger – 21 minutes)
Minutes later a similar move was fashioned but De Gea managed to fist the corner clear to clear the danger. United were soon to draw level though when some lax defending from Jose Enrique saw Rafael win the ball and produce a great pull-back for Park to control and fire low past Reina.
Liverpool 1 United 1 (Park – 39 minutes)
The equaliser saw United go on the front foot but Liverpool shut up shop until the whistle for half time brought a break to proceedings.
Half Time – Liverpool 1 United 1
Second Half – Our hosts got the second half underway but it was United that looked the livelier. A cross from Giggs caused Liverpool problems but Valencia couldn`t take full advantage of the opportunity. Liverpool thought they should have had a penalty when it was claimed that Smalling has handled the ball whilst he was on the deck but Mark Halsey was having none of it.
Welbeck thought he`d put United ahead but smart work from Skrtel prevented him from scoring after he`d rounded the keeper. With the atmosphere still red-hot, Maxi`s two footed lunge on Giggs went unpunished, but Halsey booked Rafael for a body-check on Downing. From the resulting free-kick, De Gea produced a good save to deny Gerrard.
Dalglish introduced Bellamy and Ferguson brought on Hernandez as both sides looked to win the game at the first attempt. With time running down Kuyt scored and gave Liverpool victory. A long ball got flicked on by Carroll and Kuyt`s low shot, from inside the area; beat De Gea at his near post.
Liverpool 2 United 1 (Kuyt -88 minutes)
Matters could have gotten worse though when a header from Carroll came back off the bar only for Kuyt to stab the loose ball wide.
