I hasn`t taken too long, on the back of a couple of David de Gea errors, for the tabloid press to start focusing on the possibility of our Danish stopper, Anders Lindegaard, being given a first team opportunity in the Premier League.

Lindegaard, who cost something approaching a quarter of the price paid for De Gea, is a more than competent stopper and would jump at the chance to oust the young Spaniard from the team, despite the apparent mutual respect all keepers have for each other.

In doing so, the tabloids, naturally, pull up a few quotes to support the prospect with Lindegaard showing a degree of confidence when it comes to being asked to step into the breach, commenting,

“I`m not scared about being #1 at Man United. That is why I came here – to play and be the best.”

“It doesn`t matter who cost what, the manager will make the decision.”

“I have no fear and I have belief in my own ability to perform at this level, otherwise I wouldn`t be here. I want more than making it a difficult decision for the boss. I want to play regularly.”

Obviously the lad isn`t lacking in confidence and has also reflected on the situation he finds himself in at his new club further adding,

“Six months ago I couldn`t have dreamt of a better scenario than this. I knew pre-season would be incredibly important to my Manchester United career, the trip to the US was the real test.”

“I was pleased with my performances and I have a feeling I`ve fulfilled both mine and everyone else`s expectations.”

“My pre-season has been close to perfection. That gives me great belief in myself and my abilities and I`m very optimistic going into the new season.”

One game in and already the tabloid speculation, as we`ve pointed out, has started about Sir Alex Ferguson questioning whether his Spanish work-in-progress is up to the immediate task in hand.
