According to several French media reports, Bordeaux’s Gabriel Obertan will sign for Manchester United today. L’Equipe claims that an agreement between the clubs has been in place for several weeks now but the fee won’t be announced.

The paper, which rarely prints rubbish, quotes Bordeaux president Jean-Louis Triaud who said: ‘It’s actually a great opportunity. We would love to see Gabriel improving at such a club.’

A move for Obertan would certainly be a surprise: the young winger – also capable of playing a second striker or an attacking central midfielder – is believed to have a bright future ahead of him but he did not set the world on fire at Bordeaux last season and he was loaned out to Lorient for the second part of the campaign where he did well but wasn’t outstanding.

So all in all it smells like David Bellion Mark II – but who knows, bigger Fergie gambles turned out to be huge successes. More to follow if there’s any official confirmation or denial of the story.
