I’ve always suspected David James is not a man of football clich├ęs, but his comments about Cristiano Ronaldo have rather surprised me though I can understand his opinion.

‘He is a b*****d!’ the admirably open James said. ‘He hits an unbelievable ball and as soon as you go to try and save it, it`s in the back of your net.

“You know when he steps up he is going to absolutely spank it but you cannot read the flight of the ball.

“He puts no swerve on it but when he strikes it well, he hits with so much power there is only place it is going to end up.”

Naturally, it was the first sentence what I had found a little unusual at first, the remaining part is only about stating the blatantly obvious. Yet it’s refreshing to see a footballer giving free reins to his emotions in front of the watchful eyes of the media. It’s no shock as he confessed he tried to prepare for Ronaldo’s free-kicks – an impossible task when the Portuguese is on his day.

Anyway, Ronaldo scooped the Fans’ Young Player of The Year award at FIFPro’s annual awards’ ceremony. The title has little prestige and if you take into account that FIFPro consider Ronaldinho to be the best player of 2006, (did they watch the European Cup final and the World Cup?)then it turns out to be an absolutely meaningless award. I’ve mentioned it, though.
