Is the proposed desire to land the player done and dusted?

Back in those troubled days when our central defence was bereft of fit players and leaking goals on a regular basis, there was a lot of talk of Manchester United making a move for a Dutch centre-back.

All the talk was of Louis van Gaal pursuing somebody who was part of his 2014 Dutch World Cup squad for the tournament in Brazil, one Ron Vlaar.

At the time the consensus of opinion on Vital Manchester United, and several other sites, was that Vlaar might not be the class of defender we should be looking out for.

However, all the talk in the media, particularly the tabloid variety, was that United would indeed be making a move for the centre-back.

In response, his current club, Aston Villa, declared that they would be doing everything possible to tie Vlaar to Villa Park for the foreseeable future.

It`s strange then that since that plethora of talk, the rumours linking Ron Vlaar to a move to Old Trafford have ceased and just as strange that the player, who is out of contract at the end of the season, hasn`t been involved in any transfer talks with Aston Villa yet.

Does anyone else see Vlaar coming to Old Trafford, for free, this summer once his ties with Villa are severed, or has it really all just died a death this transfer talk?
