When United were trailing Villa 1-2 at Old Trafford after Liverpool had beaten Fulham with a last-gasp goal it looked like the pendulum has swung towards the Scousers irrevocably. They were in form while we looked hopeless, struck down by injuries and bad form.

Fast forward 20 minutes: Kiko Macheda scores a delightful, fabulous winner and changes the complexion of the title race. We’re out of our terrible slump, back on winning track. At last we’ve seen a real Manchester United comeback, just in time when it looked like there’s no way back after an alarming dip in form.

I hope it’s not a false dawn but if this winner will not inject momentum and confidence into the team then nothing can. A good result and a good showing against Porto can reinforce this effect. Luck has deserted us in recent weeks (while Liverpool had plenty of it all season), hopefully it will return now.

I firmly believe we’re back on track. We have 8 games left and this Macheda goal might have dealt a hammer blow to Liverpool’s hopes: for once more the destiny of the Premier League title is firmly in Manchester United’s hands. We should not relinquish it again.
