Is There An Ulterior Motive In Offering Jones A Contract Extension

|

Mutterings relating to the weak link in the Manchester United side being the heart-of-the-defence have generated numerous column inches over the past few months.

A failure to recruit a central defender, or two, has caused us pain as we look towards becoming title contenders again, although some may point out that expenditure to cover those two positions has been something Mourinho has approved of earlier in his managerial reign.

Now, whether the situation will be addressed in the January transfer window remains to be seen, although I fear that, with regards to this season and the Premier League, it may be too late.

But, whilst we look towards the transfer window and any possible arrivals, it appears that a current incumbent of a defensive position, within the squad, Phil Jones, is set to extend his stay with the club.

The tabloid publication, the Sun, is reporting that although Jones current contract runs out in the summer and that Manchester United are, seemingly, looking to recruit for the heart of the defence, the former Blackburn man will be awarded a contract extension to keep him at Old Trafford, therefore thwarting any attempts by Arsenal and Tottenham to lure the player south.

But, is Jones worthy of a place in the back-four if Manchester United are to thrive in their attempts to end City’s Premier League domination or is a contract extension merely a ploy to keep a valuable squad member at the club knowing there is a versatility with regards to where he could play?
