Stoke assistant Mark Bowen had confirmed a Stoke interest in signing Phil Jones but they were told they couldn’t have him and he wasn’t for sale.

United legend Mark Hughes has further confirmed Stoke’s interest in signing Jones should the Red Devils have a change of heart about selling the England defender, which presently Jose Mourinho isn’t said to be willing to do.

We know a near certainty is if the 24-year-old is allowed to leave Old Trafford he’ll not be going to Arsenal, who have also shown an interest.

Talking ahead of Stoke’s weekend match Hughes confirmed in his pre-conference his enquiries after Jones and hinted at a retained interest with patience being shown if needed.

‘We’ve made enquiries, we’ve talked about a lot of players, too many to list. Clearly he’s a player that has got good pedigree, is at a good club and sometimes you just enquire just to see what the current thinking is on current players.’
