FIFA rules allow Gabriel Heinze to buy out himself from the rest of his contract – in that case United would get much less than their valuation of the player.

As we reported, Heinze had flewn to Madrid to hold talks with Real officials about a possible move. However, the English press reckon that he might upset Manchester United by evoking a FIFA ruling that would reduce his price.

Players who have spent three years of their current contract and are out of a protected period in terms of age are able to buy themselves out of the remainder of their contract.

In the case of Heinze that would mean a £4million fee for a player we had acquired for £6.9million… The buying club would compensate him with liberal amounts of money as signing on fee.

It would hardly be a financial disaster but would leave a sour taste in the mouth if Heinze is really leaving. Hopefully, he’ll not choose this way and will allow United to set his price.
