Another delay in the protracted transfer saga of Owen Hargreaves: the midfielder returns to Canada and will sign for the Reds next week.

Are you familiar with Michael Ende and his Neverending Story? And do you know why I mention it now?

The transfer of Owen Hargreaves to Manchester United has still not happened though the Reds had been linked with him as early as May 2006.

The Bayern Munich midfielder often expressed his desire to sign for the club but Bayern had blocked his way until last week when Franz Beckenbauer announced that Owen would be leaving.

The England international is reported to have completed a medical at Old Trafford last Thursday but he has not signed his contract yet.

Reports now claim the 26-year-old flies back to Canada today to spend a week with his family. He will return to Manchester early next week and will sign his contract then.

I’d be relieved if it was over. This transfer had been delayed so many times that I often wonder if it would ever happen. By now I would not be surprised if he dropped a bombshell next week by announcing he would sign for Chelsea instead…
