Darron Gibson wants to stay at Manchester United. The 21-year-old Irish midfielder’s contract is expiring and he’s been linked to Wolves and Everton. However, he sees his future at Old Trafford.

‘My contract is coming to an end so, hopefully, at the end of the month I’ll be signing a new one,’ said Gibson.

‘My current deal ends at the end of next season but, normally, a player would enter into new contract talks at the end of this month.

‘I’ve been told that a few clubs had expressed an interest in signing me, but I want to give it a good push and have a proper go at it next season before I decide to go anywhere else.’

He’s got quite a job on his hands but perhaps this is the right time for him: Scholes and Giggs are going out of football now, Hargreaves’ fitness is a big question mark and Anderson could not repeat the performances of his excellent 2007/08 season so there’s a little void in the middle of the park.

However, if Fergie signs a central midfielder – and though I’m all for blooding in our own youngsters, I think he should – then his chances will become almost non-existent. He’s got his limitations but he’s undoubtedly a very talented midfielder. However, he’s unlikely to ever become a major player at Old Trafford – at his age, the much-maligned Fletcher was already a 30-games-per-season player…
