The last two close-seasons have seen Sir Alex Ferguson start to shape his side of the future.

Sir Alex has made several acquisitions, all of which (apart form Bebe maybe) auger well for our future.

Last summer, Chris Smalling joined us from Fulham and although he didn`t feature eon a regular basis last season we saw enough, when he did, to convince us he is a star of the future.

This summer, we`ve signed Phil Jones from Blackburn. His signing is an exciting one with the player having, during his brief Premier League career, received rave reviews.

More importantly, they`re both English and allow Sir Alex a degree of flexibility when he names his squads for the Premier League and the Champions League.

Continuing on the English theme, it`s very likely, that in years to come, we`ll have an all English central defensive partnership with Smalling partnering Jones, something they already do at England U21 level.

It`s something Smalling has spoken about as the U21 team go about their business at the European Championships, in Denmark, with Smalling commenting to the press,

“Phil and I have played together for the last two group games and the play-off win over Romania.”

“I was in the squad before him but since then Jonah has come in and done really well.”

“We`ve set our stall from the start and he has played so well.”

“I don`t think we`ve lost a competitive match when we`ve played alongside each other for the U21`s. If we get a couple more clean sheets in our next group games then that should see us through the group and into the knockout stages.”

“It`s brilliant that Phil and I will be playing for the same club. I`ve really enjoyed playing with him for England and hopefully we can get better for United and England.”

Just the small matter of Ferdinand and Vidic to displace yet!
