Ben Foster is in a weird position. He is third choice for Manchester United yet he was selected to start against Brazil in Doha on Saturday. He did reasonably well although he gave away a penalty but that was mostly Wes Brown’s fault. However, he’s somewhat frustrated by his club difficulties.

‘It’s a weird situation,’ he said.

‘I am third choice for United at the moment yet I am playing for my country.

‘It is very disheartening not even to be on the bench at United. Edwin is one of the best in the world. I can’t really go knocking on the manager’s door and say he is not doing his job because he is.’

Oh, a footballer looking past the interests of his own career! Refreshing. However, if Foster would like a permanent place in the England team he should seek a move in my opinion. Those mistakes he admitted to have made severely dented his confidence and it looks like the pressure created by the United shirt is too much for him. Van der Sar is still the undisputed first choice at 39 and I expect Fergie to purchase a goalkeeper soon.
