Darren Fletcher reckons United will be more rigid, disciplined and less expansive next season. Which, considering that our great defence won us the title more than anything last season, will take some doing.

‘We have always been tight at the back because we have a great defensive record but maybe we have been a little bit too expansive at times,’ Fletcher said.

‘The ethos of the club is about attacking football. However, you can’t be wide open and attacking all the time.’

‘You also have to be disciplined and I think you are going to see a more rigid 4-4-2 formation this season.’

There will be less interchanging and less Total Football, I think that’s what he meant. Or at least I hope because if we focus on discipline and organisation even more than we did last season we’ll bore everyone to death…

There’s no doubt at all that more often than not we’ll play 4-4-2 – without Ronaldo and with Rooney getting frustrated with his wide role we do not have the personnel to play 4-3-3. And 4-4-2 is a more rigid formation, with less scope for roaming and creative freedom. But it does not necessarily mean that we’ll have to be even more defensive – yet that’s what Fletcher hinted at. Hopefully that won’t be the case.
