That man Ronaldo again produced the goods whilst Wayne Rooney scored as well to virtually assure Manchester United’s passage through to the semi-final of the Champions League.

It was the fifth time in a year the two sides had met, and since the first match 12 months ago, Roma have not been able to overcome the Premier League champions. However, it was United’s first victory at the third time of asking in the Italian capital with a professional and proud display.

Paul Scholes teed up Cristiano Ronaldo with a superb cross which the Portuguese winger, running a full thirty yards, darted into the corner of the net with a thunderous header to score his 36th goal of the season.

Wayne Rooney added a second after forcing home Park Ji-Sung’s header back across goal and in truth it could have been so much more. Rooney’s subsequent shot wide was sandwiched in between two Ronaldo efforts, the first hitting the outside of the post and then a volley which flew over the bar. But Sir Alex Ferguson wasn’t going to complain.

Speaking after the match, Fergie says it was a ‘marvelous result’ and believes his strike force of Rooney & Ronaldo were a constant threat.
