In the midst of the ruins of our Carling Cup defeat at Derby, we signed a ‘Carling Cup player’. Ritchie de Laet signed a three-year-deal at Old Trafford, leaving Stoke where he spent one and a half year.

He signed for the Potters in August 2007 but hasn’t made a first-team appearance since that. Which makes it kinda odd why United would want to sign him. He’s a defender and Royal Antwerp, his previous club, surely gave parent club United a glowing report but it still does not explain why anyone felt we need him.

Was he simply bought for the Reserves? But why on Earth should we sign 20-year-old players just to strengthen the reserves? So that they will get further in numerous competitions and our youngsters will have more experience at playing under pressure, however little the pressure is in a Reserve competition? Who knows. But I can’t see that he would make the first team…
