Manchester United face a difficult challenge as they bid to win in the Champions League for the first time this year.

The 2008 winners surprisingly drew their opening game against Rangers a fortnight ago, and now go to Spain – a place where they have won just once in their last 18 visits.

Their task is made much harder by the absence of Wayne Rooney. The 24-year old picked up an ankle injury and could miss up to three weeks of action, including England’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro.

On a more positive note however Michael Carrick is in line to make his first start of the season. The midfielder hasn’t started a game since the Community Shield in early August, whilst Rio Ferdinand is set to partner Nemanja Vidic at the back for the first time this season.
