Look, I love Carlos Tevez and all. And he was absolutely brilliant today. But the timing of his comments, just when United are attempting to wrap up a third successive league title and aiming for a second Champions League victory in a row… suffice to say that it’s unfortunate to be all immersed in himself these days…

His boss, though, wasn’t going to be drawn into a war of words or anything.

‘I didn’t read the papers,’ Sir Alex told Sky Sports.

‘You hear things, but, look, he is a Manchester United player. The fans love him. Our fans love triers. When players try, the fans love that.’

And asked about the rumours, he merely repeated that Tevez was a Manchester United player. This cagey stance was not surprising: he’s got some mild concerns, like a league game at Wigan in three days’ time, to occupy his mind at the moment…

I found Tevez’s appeal to the fans a tad tasteless, if I’m honest. Even if I’m alone with it. Couldn’t really join in the chorus of ‘Fergie, sign him up’.
