Up until now only us and Everton have failed to dip into the transfer market. As weeks went by and rumours were quashed many a United fan (me included) expected us to start the season with the same squad; hardly a bad thing considering the heroics they performed last season.

However, today Ferguson has admitted to having a list of 3 or 4 strikers in his mind – one of which will be with us before next Sunday`s opener against Newcastle at Old Trafford.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Ferguson revealed he has been in the market for a Striker…

“We are looking at three or four different options in the striking department which I hope will come to a happy conclusion.”

Throughout the summer we have been linked with the likes of Benzema, Berbatov, Huntelaar, Santa Cruz, David Villa and most recently David Silva, but Ferguson has opted to keep his cards close to his chest, instead leaving reporters will an encouraging statement of intent…

“Hopefully we will have someone in for the start of the season.’

Indeed, earlier on in the day our very own John O`shea claimed he wouldn`t be surprised if the gaffer has something up his sleeve on the transfer front…

“I am sure he will have a few ideas in mind anyway. The deadline is a few weeks away yet so we might have a new face or two.’

However, despite all the talk of new strikers, Fergie has refuted claims it would lead to the sale of Louis Saha; a player who Fergie still believes has a future at Old Trafford…

“You don’t want to give up on people like that just because they have had a few injuries. When he is fit, Louis is an explosive player who will guarantee 20 goals a season. Louis is on a programme at the moment which we feel will get him to 100% fitness. It is more about his confidence in doing this programme which will get him back playing all the time. Hopefully that is the case because he is such a fantastic player.’

Well, it would seem our summer of discontent is well and truly on its way, and I for one am excited about the upcoming week. Hopefully tomorrow`s Community Shield will see Ferguson reveal to us a little more on this ‘mystery striker’.

As always, more on this as we get it…
