United beat Stoke 5-0 at Old Trafford today and the scoreline suggests this was an easy win with a magnificent performance. Well, it wasn’t quite like that: the first half was extremely difficult as Stoke’s spirited resistance limited our chances.

In the second half we flew over Stoke and in the end produced a brilliant display for Sir Alex’s big day: it was fifty years since making his debut in the Queen’s Park first team. Scotland’s most famous amateur club was a dream come true for Fergie but this is not a time for dreams…

‘The scoreline was fantastic, but I didn’t think we played that well in the first half,’ he said.

‘I thought Stoke did really well, they kept their midfield close to the back four – very difficult to break down.

‘Maybe we scored too early (through Ronaldo in the 3rd minute) but the speed of our game wasn’t as good as it normally is.

‘The goal on half-time killed Stoke and thereafter the second-half performance was marvellous. There was some great football, some great goals.’

Yeah, that’s about right.
