Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that his charges did what they had to do – and you can hardly argue with that.

Our 2-0 win over Sheffield was not a beauty by no means but three points are in the bag and it’s only five games to go now.

“It was a professional job and a good result,” said Fergie. “The performance was economical. We didn’t kill ourselves, which is important. In the second half with the score at 2-0, the game was over and we kept the ball at the back to save our legs. That was the sensible thing to do.”

I absolutely agree, especially with Evra out so early. Another injury could have been devastating but as far as the treatment table is concerned, we got good news. Fergie has praised Richardson and Fletcher for performing acceptably as full-backs, I think most United fans will be relieved to hear that we’ll have a defensive line made up entirely of defenders against Middlesbrough.

“I’ll have Ferdinand and O’Shea back on Saturday,” said the boss. “I could have played John against Sheffield United, but he has been doing some good work in training and he will give us some experience and strength at the back.”

As for Evra’s injury, the Frenchman undergoes a scan in the morning and that will reveal the extent of his injury. Let’s hope it’s not serious.
