Ryan Giggs’ quickly-taken free-kick sank Lille in the Champions League and their players threatened to walk off the pitch in order to protest against the referee’s decision that the goal should stand. Sir Alex Ferguson believes UEFA must do something about this kind of behaviour.

‘It’s complete intimidation of the referee, UEFA have got to do something about that,’ Ferguson told ITV. ‘It’s disgraceful, it’s not football.’

‘Lille’s staff encouraged their players to come off the pitch, it’s a disgrace. I’ve never seen anything like that in my life. I can’t understand it.

‘I’ve seen it [a quickly-taken free-kick] half a dozen times in England in the last season; Arsenal have done it two or three times. It’s just unbelievable.

‘UEFA will come down strongly, they have to. You can’t tolerate that. Missiles were coming down on Gary Neville and on the staff.’
