With the first trophy of the season already claimed, the Community Shield, Sir Alex Ferguson went on the offensive when it came to defending his recent goalkeeping acquisition.

David De Gea, might not have had the best of games but he still has the backing of Sir Alex and our Scottish manager was quick to offer a barbed response remarking,

“De Gea will play – we spent £18 million on him so the long term view is to give him a chance.”

“He was unfortunate with the second goal (at Wembley) and had no chance with the first.’

“It was interesting that there was no criticism of Joe Hart. It was exactly the same type of goal (he conceded) and he`s your bloody national keeper.”

Nice to see, as we chase our 20th top-flight title, that Sir Alex has lost none of that drive, determination and acid tongue that have all served him well.
