United beat Wigan Athletic 1-0 thanks to Wayne Rooney’s first minute goal. The reigning Champions moved up into second place, a couple of points behind Liverpool with a game still in hand over their rivals. For detailed match report, come back tomorrow – now let’s see what the bosses had to say about the game.

Sir Alex Ferguson

i>’I thought Wigan were absolutely fantastic. We have had to dig really deep. We have won games 1-0 before and they have gone towards some of the titles we have won.

‘We need to kick on now – this is the time because we are in the run-in.

‘I’m delighted with the win after beating Chelsea because big games take a lot out of you mentally, the concentration levels needed take their toll.

‘We lost Wayne early, and then Carlos came on and did fantastic for us. It was a test of our character in the last half hour because Wigan gave an absolutely brilliant performance.’

‘I thought Nemanja Vidic was fantastic. He epitomised everything. If you see a better centre-half display than that anywhere in the country then you are a very lucky man.’

Steve Bruce

i>’We got off to the worst possible start. After that we needed courage and resilience and they epitomised that.

‘Once we settled into the game we gave as much as anybody could have given. It was an all-round great performance.

‘We were playing against the best team in the world and we have come here and given a great account of ourselves.

‘We have some good players at this football club, players who wanted come and prove themselves and play at Old Trafford.

‘There were some wonderful performances, but we have been beaten.’

Suffice to say that I’m not as pleased as Fergie…
