News has broken that the former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, has called time on his playing career.

Thirty-six year old Rio has had an awful time of it lately, following the tragic loss of his wife, Rebecca Ellison, to cancer back on 1st May.

In deciding to hang up his boots, Rio has remarked to the media about one person in particular,

“My time at United allowed me to achieve everything I desire in football. None of it would have been possible without the genius of one man – Sir Alex. He developed us as men, not just footballers.

“For me he will always be the greatest boss in British football history.”

Rio calls time on a career that has seen him wear the colours of West Ham United, Leeds United, Manchester United and Queens Park Rangers.

During his career Rio was capped 81 times by England and his contribution to football is one that should be admired.
