Patrice Evra believes Kitson’s studs-first tackle on him warranted dismissal in yesterday’s Premiership opener.

The red-headed striker spent an amazing 37 seconds on the pitch after coming on for Kevin Doyle and his late, late tackle on Evra earned a red card for him.

The victim, our French defender (winger?) claims the dismissal was nothing more than what Kitson deserved.

‘I went to kick the ball and I just saw his foot coming towards me,’ he said.

‘I don’t understand why he did it. It was very bad. It is the right decision to send him off.’

The thing is, that I think we’ve seen worse tackles than that – but it’s still true that Kitson did not even try to play the ball, he went for Evra’s leg.

However, as I said, it had made no difference: Doyle failed to touch the ball more than three times during the game and a similar fate would have awaited Kitson as United camped in the Reading half for the entire game.

Twenty-two shots against three – a striker’s dismissal meant absolutely nothing in such circumstances.
