Apparently, Sir Alex has been trying to persuade Patrice Evra to play in the heart of defence tonight as Manchester United take on Wolfsburg in the UEFA Champions League Group B. Which is somewhat baffling.

‘We know we have a difficult task picking a back four that can unite together and give me good organisation and good passing ability considering we don`t have natural centre-backs. These are the decisions we are addressing, and hopefully we get the answer.’

That’s what he said and he did not mention the idea of playing Evra in the middle and it does not sound logical to me anyway: if we want good organisation and passing ability and height in the heart of the defence, then surely Carrick and Gibson are automatic picks? Not to mention the obvious question: who will play left-back if Evra is centre-back? Anderson?

Of course there’s another option there…

“It`s worth trying one defender! Manchester United are always first at doing something, so we will try and do that again on Tuesday by playing with just one defender!’

There’s an idea! By all chance we will start with only one DEFENDER anyway – and there will seven or eight midfielders in the team… it will be funny, in a way, and it’s a good thing our qualification does not hinge on this game.
