Eriksen and Garnacho help United clinch three points

|

Manchester United youngster Alejandro Garnacho came off the bench to score a stoppage-time winner to help Man United win 2-1 against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

In what was a must-win game for United, it leaves them on the toes of Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle as the gap to Spurs is now just three points despite Antonio Conte’s men having a superior goal difference.

United had to work hard for the victory against a spirited Fulham side, who caused United plenty of problems in the first and second half.

Christian Eriksen gave United the lead in the 14th minute after turning home a Bruno Fernandes cross, which was the Dane’s first goal for Man United and the 150th of his senior career.

Eriksen’s 150th senior goal caps off a remarkable and awe-inspiring story for the Danish international after he suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening Euro 2020 game against Finland.

Fulham gave a good account of themselves, and played excellently in the second half as they created numerous chances to score, but were thwarted on numerous occasions by De Gea, who was overlooked for the Spain 26-man squad to go to Qatar.

Fulham did get their goal in the second half through ex-Red, Daniel James, who came off the substitute bench to score an equaliser for Fulham after Tom Cairney’s low cross found the Welshman.

Fulham thought they had done enough to secure a well-deserved point, however, 18-year-old Alejandro Garnacho had other ideas as he raced onto an Eriksen pass to slot home for United from a tight angle to give the Reds a 2-1 that boosts their Champions League hopes.

Garnacho wheeled away in celebration , removing his shirt and sent the United players and fans into bedlam.

This was the final game for both teams as the curtain was brought down on the first half of the Premier League season because of the World Cup, which starts on Sunday 20 November.
