Manchester United take on Southampton this Sunday, at stake is the first major trophy of the season, the EFL Cup.

Ahead of the game we`ve delved into the record and from books to come up with a raft of fascinating facts.

? The two sides have met once before in the final of a competition. Back in 1976 the two sides took part in the FA Cup Final. Southampton produced a cup-shock by winning the final 1-0 with Bobby Stokes scoring the only goal of the game.

? The win referenced to above, remains the only major English trophy Southampton have won.

? When it comes to playing the same team in both the FA and League Cup Finals, this will be the third time it has happened to United, the other two teams being Liverpool and Aston Villa.

? This Sunday will be Manchester United`s ninth appearance in the League Cup Final. The previous 8 appearances have seen Manchester United win 4 and lose 4.

? 3 of the 4 victories mentioned above have been in the past 3 finals United have participated in – 2006 v Wigan, 2009 v Spurs and 2010 v Aston Villa.

? When it comes to appearances in the League Cup Final, only Liverpool, with 12, can better the 9 of Manchester United.

? In his managerial career in English football, Jose Mourinho has reached the League Cup Final on 3 occasions and on each occasion he`s won the trophy.

? Only Brian Clough and Sir Alex Ferguson have won the trophy on more occasions than Jose Mourinho, with the du having recorded 4 wins.

? Mourinho has never lost an English Cup Final in his career, adding a 2007 FA Cup to his 3 League Cup Final wins.

? In reaching the final Southampton have yet to concede a goal, only the second time in the history of the League Cup to have achieved that feat, Spurs, back in 1981 / 1982 were the other side to do so.

? This will be only the second major domestic cup final Claude Puel has reached during his managerial career, the first saw his Monaco side lose 2-1, after extra time, to Lyon.
