Putting aside his troubles with United, Ruud van Nistelrooy is relishing the World Cup challenge.

Holland coach Marco van Basten remains confident of Ruud’s ability to deliver World Cup goals despite the striker’s poor showing in Sunday’s win over Serbia and Montenegro.

Van Nistelrooy hardly got a kick in Leipzig as matchwinner Arjen Robben stole all the limelight.

But van Basten: ‘I have not discussed anything with Ruud. He did not play well on Sunday but these things happen.

‘I played a lot of games at a very high level. Sometimes you play badly, sometimes you play well. There is nothing unusual in that.

‘I still have total confidence in his ability.’
