Our neighbours are still in that merry delusion that comes from a lot of money and the signing of ‘high-profile’ players. However, reality is about to strike them hard, according to Sir Alex.

‘It won’t be easy for them to win anything, even with the players they’ve bought. I can’t look at them as our main competitors. Liverpool and Chelsea are our main competitors.’

‘They’ve bought a lot of high-profile players but they have ten strikers. That’s a hell of a lot. I haven’t spoken to all the managers but the one or two I have are saying ‘Who are they going to leave out?’

‘How does he pick a team? We’re all interested.’

How will he motivate a lazy Adebayor? How will he persuade Tevez that playing a lot less than he did at United is actually good for him? City fans are very funny with their new-found smugness and confidence – some of them actually believe they could challenge for the title with his kind of unbalanced squad, stuffed with overrated strikers. Bless them.
