Sir Bobby Charlton would be happy if Ryan Giggs surpassed his record of 759 games for United. The Welsh Wizard played his 688th match for the Reds on Saturday against Manchester City and is now second on the list along Bill Foulkes.

‘I do not feel threatened by Ryan. I would be pleased if he did it and I am sure he will,’ said Charlton.

‘We are only talking about two seasons, so he should do it. The better the team plays, the more chances he will have and, when he does, I will be the first person to give him a hug.’

That’s pretty much the attitude we learned to expect from Sir Bobby and the great man praised Giggsy sincerely.

‘Ryan is a great lesson to any young player,’ he said.

‘Obviously we played in different eras and we didn’t have any substitutes back then, so we didn’t get any rest.

‘But nevertheless, you cannot say Ryan is anything other than a marvellous footballer and I am proud he has been associated with Manchester United for so long.’
