News has broken, overnight, that one of the most popular players, at Old Trafford, is set to call time on his Manchester United playing career.

Michael Carrick, now 36-years-of-age, hasn`t appeared for the first team since undergoing surgery, back in September, to correct an irregular heart rhythm.

Although Carrick returned to training in November, it appears the realisation has hit home that, come the end of the season, it is time to retire from the game.

However, Carrick will not be lost to Manchester United as the midfielder has agreed to take up the clubs offer of a first-team coaching role.

Discussing the situation, Jose Mourinho has remarked to the media,

‘The club would be very happy for him to do that. I would be very happy also for him to do that.

‘I expect him to join.

‘He had a few months without even training so now he is in his second week of training with the team. He is a very important player for us.

‘I think it is a good decision for the team and a good decision for him to finish playing football and not injured or with some problem.’

During his playing career with Manchester United, Carrick has won the following honours:

? Premier League titles – 5 times
? Champions League
? Europa League
? FIFA World Club Cup

Quite a haul I think you`ll agree.
