It was one of the most action packed halves Premier League history as a goal-less first half gave no indication as to what was to follow in the second half. A Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick, Carlos Tevez’s double strike and a volley from Rio Ferdinand saw United run rampant over managerless Newcastle at Old Trafford.

United midfielder Michael Carrick said afterwards the team always believed they would win but even by their own high standards did not see six goals fly in to Shay Given’s net to take them back to the top of the table.
